THN’s UK DVD & Blu-Ray Release Column – 26th November 2012

With just four weeks until shops close their doors for St. Nick’s visit some of the years big-hitters arrive on DVD and Blu-ray. Get ready for Teddies, Spider’s and Abs as we guide you through this weeks big releases.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (DVD/Blu-ray) – dir. Marc Webb

It seems like only yesterday little Peter Parker was fighting Venom and Sandman in one of cinema’s biggest turds SPIDER-MAN 3 but he’s back, albeit a little different. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN gives Andrew Garfield chance to don Spidey’s unitard and smooch Emma Stone – even I’d wear a glorified onesie for that. Our man Dan wasn’t sold on the titles promise but found plenty of optimism in a ” damned impressive visual that prospers further because of the ensemble cast”.

Peter Parker finds a clue that might help him understand why his parents disappeared when he was young. His path puts him on a collision course with Dr. Curt Connors, his father’s former partner.

TED (DVD/Blu-ray) – dir. Seth MacFarlane

Swearing? Check. Great cameos? Check. Humour? Check. Un-PC? Double, nay, triple check. Yep, TED has landed on Blu-ray and DVD. FAMILY GUY and AMERICAN DAD fans rejoice as, whilst TED may not hit every mark, it  “has a heart underneath the plethora of Jew jokes and sexual acts”. We don’t recommend showing it to Gran though.

As the result of a childhood wish, John Bennett’s teddy bear, Ted, came to life and has been by John’s side ever since – a friendship that’s tested when Lori, John’s girlfriend of four years, wants more from their relationship.

MAGIC MIKE (DVD/Blu-ray) – dir. Steven Soderbergh

It’s time for ladies to go rouge and men to go green as MAGIC MIKE rips of his shirt and gyrates in your general direction. With a star-making turn from Channing Tatum as the titular Mike we see “every drip of sweat, hip thrust, and act of debauchery” as Mike et al. please the masses whilst making a point – oo-er missus.

A male stripper teaches a younger performer how to party, pick up women, and make easy money.

HUNTED: SERIES ONE (DVD/Blu-ray) – creator: Frank Spotnitz

Having completed it’s run with, and been dropped by, the BBC due to poor viewing figures, HUNTED gives you a chance to watch what you didn’t on the TV. Luke in the THN office loved it, almost flirtatious in his praise “HUNTED is a fantastically crafted show that easily rivals the best of Bourne, Bond, or Ethan Hunt.” Blimey, you best check what all the fuss is about.

Meet Sam. A spy. A hunter. And herself hunted by an enemy more ruthless and determined than any she’s ever known. Sam has been running from her past her entire life but when she returns to Byzantium, the organisation that employs her, and begins to pursue her pursuer, she will discover the only way to escape that past… is to confront it. This is the story of a spy with a bull’s eye on her back, a human target unable to trust anyone at any time, even the man she loves. She is, quite literally, running for her life.

BRAVE (DVD/Blu-ray) – dir. Mark Andrews, Brenda Chapman

Head to the Highlands for some high jinks as Disney-Pixar unleash BRAVE on the public. Hit and miss with critics, there is plenty to love about BRAVE “the humour is as razor-sharp as ever and the animation at its most impressive and jaw dropping”

Determined to make her own path in life, Princess Merida defies a custom that brings chaos to her kingdom. Granted one wish, Merida must rely on her bravery and her archery skills to undo a beastly curse.

Wow, what a week but we aren’t done yet. Also out are DIAL M FOR MURDER, STRANGERS ON A TRAIN, and NORTH BY NORTHWEST in ALFRED HITCHCOCK COLLECTION (DIAL M is also available separately). SOUND OF MY VOICE, a little treat focussing on cult, ANNIE debuts on Blu-ray 30 years after release, IN YOUR HANDS with the ever reliable Kristen Scott Thomas, and JIA ZHENG KE COLLECTION on DVD –comprising three films it is a must for fans.

We’ll be back next week with a much quieter but equally exciting collection – we think you’ll like one in particular

Sam is a bloody lovely lad born and raised in Bristol (he’s still there and can’t escape). Favourite films include THE LOST BOYS, DRIVE, FIGHT CLUB and COMMANDO, well pretty much any 1980s Arnie film you can throw his way…even RED SONJA. Sam once cancelled a Total Film subscription after they slagged off Teen Wolf. He resubscribed 2 days later.
