Casino films are very popular, and while the likes of Martin Scorsese’s Casino, Jon Favreau-penned Swingers and even the Nicolas Cage Oscar-winner Leaving Las Vegas have a very obvious casino theme, there are a lot of films involving casinos that you may have never heard of. Here are three that we think are simply unmissable having gained some inspiration from checking out a Unibet Casino bonus code from this site who post offers from various online gaming casinos.
The first film on our list is a very controversial one as the film was considered a huge flop at the box-office – Guy Ritchie’s gangster epic Revolver. While it may not have pulled in the dollars at the worldwide box-office – it only managed to muster $6.6 million back in 2007 – we genuinely have a soft-spot for it. A just-about-to-be-big-in-Hollywood Jason Statham leads the cast of the film in a role which sees him sport an ample head of head – and a stunning ‘tashe too. Set against the backdrop of many casinos, the film saw his character, gambler Jake Green, take part in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse with some rather unsavoury characters. Full of stylish editing and camera work which you may expect from a Guy Ritchie film, Revolver may not have reached the heights of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels or Snatch, but it provided a huge launch pad for the talented British filmmaker who would go on to make the Sherlock Holmes movies with Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law, the big-screen remake of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and the huge King Arthur movie and Disney’s live-action version of Aladdin. We like it.
Next up on our list The Gambler, and we’re talking about the original 1974 version and not the more recent remake. Leading the cast of the film is a post-The Godfather James Caan as an English professor named Alex Freed, who is based in New York City. Freed has a gambling addiction and we quickly find out that he has lost a lot of money betting on basketball – something to the tune of around $44,000. Owing the money, he stills continues to gamble and actually wins big at a local casino, only to blow the money shortly afterwards. The film is a cinematic marvel and well worth the watch.
Finally comes another film about gambling, the Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendelsohn-led Mississippi Grind. This one comes to the screen courtesy of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, two filmmakers behind the likes of Half Nelson and the upcoming superhero movie Captain Marvel. This drama hones in on Mendelsohn’s character of Gerry, a down on his luck gambler owing more than he can afford. He meets Reynolds’ Curtis, a young poker player who offers to help Gerry out of the hole by hitting the road to attempt to win back his losses. Mississippi Grind was one of the best films of 2015 and shined the light on its two lead actors. Mendelsohn went on to star in the likes of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Robin Hood, and Reynolds donned the red superhero suit for two hilarious turns as Marvel comic-book character Deadpool.
