Interview: Natasha Henstridge talks ‘Species’ at 30 and new film ‘Cinderella’s Revenge’

Natasha Henstridge got her big break in the movies playing alien-human hybrid, Sil, in Species. The film is viewed by many as a sci-fi cult classic and made an instant star out of Henstridge. Since then, Henstridge has spent the last thirty years carving out a career playing strong women. Her latest role, in Andy Edwards’ Cinderella’s Revenge, sees her step into the wings of Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother.

Following in the footsteps of last year’s Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, Cinderella’s Revenge takes the popular children’s story and distorts it. This time the iconic Disney princess, played by Lauren Staerck, is pushed to breaking point, and rather than rise above her mistreatment, she embarks on blood-soaked vengeance with the help of her Fairy Godmother.

Cinderella’s Revenge is played with its tongue firmly in cheek and is a horror comedy. Director Andy Edwards combines the classic Cinderella story with the plot of a slasher, and then presents it as warped pantomime, complete with pop culture references. The cast all clearly enjoyed their time on the project with Natasha Henstridge looking particularly gleeful as the darkest iteration of Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother committed to screen. On 26th April, Cinderella’s Revenge will receive a limited release across movie theatres in America, and will be best enjoyed in the dark with a crowd of like minded horror people.

In the lead up to Cinderella’s Revenge’s cinema release, THN were able to speak with Natasha about the project in detail. Our conversation covered the audience’s fascination with seeing their childhood favourites given the horror treatment, playing the ultimate devil on the shoulder, and the professionalism of a British set. It being so close to Species turning thirty, we also discussed the impact that the role of Sil had, not only for Henstridge’s career, but also the legacy that the character has left on sci-fi cinema.

Cinderella’s Revenge arrives in US theatres from Friday 26th April.
