Jason Reitman was destined to make films

Jason Reitman felt destined to make movies.

The Canadian director – whose new film ‘Up in the Air’ stars George Clooney as a corporate high flyer –had an “innate” urge to direct feel-good films because he’s the child of a holocaust survivor.

He said: “When I was an aspiring director, I looked at the directors I admired and I wondered how they created their styles and I realised once I started directing that it’s kind of an innate thing.

“Your style speaks for itself; it’s not something you do on purpose. If you tried to do it on purpose it would be false.”

The 32-year-old filmmaker’s father came to Canada as a refugee, and had always made him appreciate his life.

He explained to The Australian: “Being the child of a Holocaust survivor makes you want to make movies that make people feel good, as opposed to growing up in Beverly Hills always knowing where your next meal’s going to come from, where I certainly feel a freedom to be a little more challenging.”
