The weekend box-office numbers are in, and it’s all getting a bit repetitive really as AVATAR is still, yes still, the number one movie in America. The 3-D film, now officially the number two money-making movie of all time, took another $48.5 million, which is still pretty huge for a film going into its fourth week out there.
Also opening to a successful first week was the vampire flick DAYBREAKERS, starring Ethan Hawke, which bagged around $15 million in its first three days, according to studio estimates. That gave it the number four spot behind the holiday season’s other two big openers SHERLOCK HOLMES and ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: THE SQUEAKQUEL. Two films which didn’t open too well was the Amy Adams rom-com LEAP YEAR and the Michael Cera comedy YOUTH IN REVOLT, which I get to see in just over a week. Can’t wait.
Here’s the top ten in full. Will we have a new number one next week. Don’t bet on it.
1. ‘Avatar,’ $48.5
2. ‘Sherlock Holmes,’ $16.6
3. ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel,’ $16.3
4. ‘Daybreakers,’ $15.0
5. ‘It’s Complicated,’ $11.0
6. ‘Leap Year,’ $9.1
7. ‘The Blind Side,’ $7.7
8. ‘Up in the Air.’ $7.1
9. ‘Youth in Revolt,’ $7.0
10. ‘The Princess and the Frog,’ $4.7
