The Hughes Brothers go from The Book Of Eli… to Akira!

So, come on peeps, what was The Book Of Eli like? Still not managed to see that movie, but someone at Warner Brothers may have dug the shit out of it as they have hired that film’s co-helmers Allen and Albert Hughes to come on board and direct the live action version of the classic manga Akira by Katsuhiro Otomo.

Vulture reports that the duo have been selected for the project by the powers that be, and will step behind the camera for the project which is being produced by Leonardo DiCaprio’s company Appian Way and Andrew Lazar, the man who is bringing this summer’s Jonah Hex film to screens.

Iron Man scripters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby are writing the screenplay.

Respecting the source’s complexity (or perhaps acquiescing to it), Warners won’t proceed with a single, live-action remake of the film, which trimmed away the last half of the 2,182-page graphic novel in order to weigh in at just over two hours. Instead, we hear that the studio is planning to make Akira in two parts, with the first three volumes of the six-volume manga making up the first film, due out next year.

The site goes on to report that Warners will make an official announcement confirming the Hughes’ involvement later this week.
