Hollywood’s elite were out in force in London last night for the 2010 BAFTA Film Awards. In pleasantly surprising news, the big winner on the night was not James Cameron‘s Avatar, but the similarly fantastic The Hurt Locker, which picked up the big one Best Film, as well as Best Original Screenplay for Mark Boal and Best Director for Kathryn Bigalow. Colin Firth, as expected, picked up Best Actor for his role in A Single Man, while fellow Brit Carey Mulligan received Best Actress for her work in An Education, an excellent movie. Christoph Waltz picked up the Best Supporting Actor gong for Inglourious Basterds and Mo’Nique won Best Supporting Actress for Precious.
Other winners on the night were Duncan Jones, who was nearly moved to tears receiving the gong for Outstanding Debut for a British Writer, Director or Producer for Moon and Up, which deservedly got Best Animated Film.
Other big winners on the night were Fish Tank which scooped Best British Film, Twilight actress Kristen Stewart, who received the Orange Rising Star award, the only gong voted for by the public, and Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner, who won the Best Adapted Screenplay award for Up In The Air.
British actress Vanessa Redgrave was given the BAFTA Fellowhip by new president of BAFTA, Prince William.
