The Hollywood News Weekly Box Office Report

This week’s low down of what’s hot… and what’s not…

Disney’s animated re-working of Rapunzel, TANGLED, from directors Nathan Greno and Byron Howard was the only new arrival that the audience seemed to get their teeth into this weekend, notching up a respectable second place with $19.7 million. The Christina Aguilera/Cher vehicle BURLESQUE found $4.5 million to finish in 5th place.

As the nation of America feasted on leftover’s Friday, it also scarfed up movies, with HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART 1 still sitting pretty at the top of the feasting table. The beginning of the end of the boy wizards odyssey in to the realms of war and death took in an estimated $20.8 million in theatres as it’s eight-day total pushed $190 million.

With TANGLED nipping at it’s heels, HARRY POTTER still managed to hold the top spot, although TANGLED has reached $40 million on it’s four-day figure. Impressive for an animated picture that’s not Christmas or festivity laiden.

Another 3D entry, Disney Animation’s MEGAMIND also seemed to reap the benefit and places at 3rd in the top five with its weekend collection reaching $5.4 million and it’s total domestic cume reaching $120 million.

Fox’s runaway train tale UNSTOPPABLE seemed to live up to it’s title as it eased in to fourth spot. It’s domestic gross rose to $53.6 million in total and it’s weekend pulling in $4.6 million alone.

The combined diva power of Cher and Christina Aguilera couldn’t raise their new, PG-13 rated BURLESQUE above fifth place. The Screen Gems production, directed by Steve Antin and released by Sony, took in about $4.5 million for the day in 3,037 theaters. Since opening Wednesday, it’s collected just under $10 million.

Fox R-rated romance, LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS, starring Jake Gyllenenhaal and Anne Hathaway directed by Edward Zwick, tagged along in sixth place with $3.8 million in 2,366 theaters. Its three-day cume stands at just under $8 million.

Rounding out the new releases, CBS Films’ actioner FASTER starring Dwayne Johnson and directed by George Tillman Jr., ranked seventh, attracting $3.2 million on Friday in 2,454 theaters, and posting a three-day tally of just under $7 million.

The United Kingdom has also been kind to HARRY POTTER, pulling in £18,319, 721 in it’s first full week of release which leads the nearest competitor DUE DATE by over £10 million.

SAW 3D and PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2 finally drop out of the top 10 as they make way for the end of year tent-pole released and festivity themed movies.  David Fincher’s THE SOCIAL NETWORK finds itself placed comfortably in the top ten, with a weekly cume of £170,000 . DESPICABLE ME also rides high with a weekly gross of just under £20 million to finish in third. Unoriginal science-fiction film SKYLINE finishes in fourth, with just over £2 million.
