Terrence Malick has had a very strange but beautiful career in Hollywood and his new venture is in keeping with his unique strangeness with TREE OF LIFE.
Malick’s films often find that normally, unreachable, goal of being both artistically impressionable and personally and deeply philosophical emotional, often finding his films un-commercially successful but lasting pieces of art with THE THIN RED LINE and BADLANDS. He also usually draws the biggest in Hollywood’s names, this time with Brad Pitt and Sean Penn. I have to say the film is visually stunning and is filmed in such a fresh and original way in context to the period (fifties) that the film is somewhat set against, and am very much looking forward to the ‘experience’. Below is the synopsis and the trailer. TREE OF LIFE is released 27th May 2011 in the USA:
“From Terrence Malick, the acclaimed director of such classic films as Badlands, Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950?s. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick’s signature imagery, we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life.”
Paul finished is BA in Film & Broadcast Productions during the summer and has somehow landed the position of Media & Marketing Manager in the London Korean Film Festival happening this November (plug).
While at University Paul found his speciality lay in Script Development, scriptwriting and Editing. He has written, edited and director a small number of not very good short films but does not let that dissuade him from powering through. After the Koreans are through with him he looks to enter the paid world of Script Development.
He likes incredibly bad horror films, East Asian movies, comics and lots of other stuff.
