For years Kevin Smith has been talking about his ‘perfect’ horror film titled, RED STATE, and as a couple of months back it finally came a reality.
RED STATE is a super low budget horror film with John Goodman, Melissa Leo, Kyle Gallner, Kevin Pollak and others about a group of teenagers who come face to face with extreme fundamentalists in middle America.
the below trailer adds to the mounting evidence that Smith is going all out on low-fi filmmaking as they completed the film in a matter of two months with the wrap party even having a screening of the film. Like Gareth Edwards, MONSTERS, Smith filmed with an editor on site, cutting the film while shooting. He has also used a crew member to produce the posters instead of a professional designer. Smith has talked at length over the years about self distributions which looks to be happening. Even the trailer looks as if he did it himself. With the success of MONSTERS, RED STATE seems to be on the same low-fi road to success, showing that it is definitely possibly to sidestep Hollywood and still produce a high quality film. I am excited about the film, not just being a fan of low-fi but also because I am dying to see a film from Smith that isn’t based on dick and fart jokes, which this should be….. hopefully
Below is the trailer as well as the character sheets for the film. RED STATE will première at Sundance 2011
Paul finished is BA in Film & Broadcast Productions during the summer and has somehow landed the position of Media & Marketing Manager in the London Korean Film Festival happening this November (plug). While at University Paul found his speciality lay in Script Development, scriptwriting and Editing. He has written, edited and director a small number of not very good short films but does not let that dissuade him from powering through. After the Koreans are through with him he looks to enter the paid world of Script Development. He likes incredibly bad horror films, East Asian movies, comics and lots of other stuff.
