James Cameron sets Avatar sequel release dates

Mark it in your calendars now folks. Drum roll please.

The director of Avatar has finally announced that the two sequels will be released in December 2014 and 2015 respectively. Cameron has also said that come of the profits from the projects will go to charitable green causes.

The as yet untitled sequels will be shot back to back and in an interview with the folks over at Entertainment Weekly, Cameron said he was currently “ hard at work” on the two screenplays that would comprise our return to the Avatar universe, he said of the project: “We are planning to shoot them together and post them together, and we will probably release them not quite back to back, but about a year apart. Christmas ’14 and ’15 is the current plan”.

It was there that he revealed that a portion of the profits will go to benefitting green causes across the globe. For those who may question whether he will stick to his word, see the special features on the Avatar Blu-Ray Special Edition and look up his trip to the amazon rainforest entitled “A Message from Pandora”.

It had been previously hinted the film might take place on another planet in the solar system inhabited by Pandora, the fertile forest moon on which the first film’s action took place. Cameron, a keen sea diver, has also expressed interest in exploring the oceans of Pandora for the film. Whatever the plan is, the director kept his lips sealed on that subject at the Producers Guild of America Awards but he did say, according again to Entertainment Weekly, that “ if you survived the first film, then you’ll be in the second in some form”. By this we take it he means characters.

I guess that’s goodbye to Sigourney Weaver and Michelle Rodriguez then; which is a shame but then, considering the possibility that the third might be a prequel and we’re back on course for a bit of that action!

Avatar grossed over $1bn across the globe on its theatrical release and currently stands as the highest grossing movie (unadjusted for inflation) of all time. The proceeds that Cameron stands to give away to green causes will be undoubtedly enormous and for that, we should be pleased.

As of writing, no titles have been leaked for the films but Cameron’s first foray into the world of the trilogy is looking all set for lift off.
