Tom Hooper and The King’s Speech are surprise DGA winners

The 2011 awards season  took a very unexpected twist over the weekend and Tom Hooper was announced the recipiant of the Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for The King’s Speech. Brit Hooper beat off stern competition from the likes of Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan), David O’Russell (The Fighter), Christopher Nolan (Inception) and David Fincher (The Social Network) to pick up the award.

Does this mean that Hooper is a cert for the Oscar? Find out at the end of next month.

Fellow winners at the DGA Awards on Saturday were Charles Ferguson fordocumentary “Inside Job”, Mick Jackson for HBO’s “Temple Grandin,” and Martin Scorsese for HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire.”
