Tim Burton drops Maleficent from his bursting schedule

Information hits The Hollywood News this morning that Tim Burton has dropped his Sleeping  Beauty-esque project Maleficent. The film is housed over at Disney, who are now said to be on the look out for a new director for the project.

The Hollywood Reporter reports the news, but gives no reason for the sudden departure of the ALICE IN WONDERLAND director. It could be because of his rammed schedule as the talented helmer has the projects FRANKENWEENIE and the in-production DARK SHADOWS on his plate at present. The word over at the trade is that the Mouse House could be looking in the direction of HARRY POTTER helmer David Yates to take over the project, but we’ll have to see if he turns out to be the man to take charge.

The film, written by “Alice” screenwriter Linda Woolverton, is a retelling of the classic Sleeping Beauty story, told from the point of view of Maleficent.
