9 Innovative Ways to Ask Your Date to Prom

How far would you go to secure the prom date of your dreams? Disney’s new movie PROM follows several high school characters as they prepare for and ultimate live through the best night in all of high school. One of these is Lloyd Taylor (Nicholas Braun), who tries desperately to win the attention of potential dates. With antics including a sign across the highway and a ransom note, Lloyd exhausts many ideas, but come the night of the prom will he have had any luck?

Like Lloyd, many high school teens in America are coming up with increasingly extravagant ways of asking their dates to prom. To mark the June 3rd release of PROM, we’ve taken a look at some of the more OTT ways real American teens have asked the all important question. Perhaps Lloyd could take some notes!

Write and perform an original song!

This guy wrote and performed an original song that was broadcast with his school’s morning announcement. He even threw in backing singers for good measure!

Rap your way to her heart!

Nothing says ‘you’ll have a great time with me’ better than a rap. Grab a beat-boxing friend and a camera, upload to YouTube and wait for the positive response!

Sing Acapella in your Spanish class!

A capella singing, when done well, will knock even the toughest of girls off their feet. Get a group of guys to harmonise and it won’t matter if you miss a few notes – singing like this requires bravery, and that fact alone should ensure you get the prom date.

Humiliate yourself with a disco dance!

If you can’t sing that well, don’t despair! Catchy lyrics to a ‘70s disco hit will convince her you’re the date she wants! And if not she might feel sorry for you after embarrassing yourself and go with you out of pity! Win-win!

Unleash the cheerleaders!

Nothing stands a better chance of winning over your prom date than having her confronted by presumably more popular and prettier cheerleaders! At least it’ll prove you’re not shallow!

Flower trail and candles!

Melt her heart with a path of roses leading to a candle lit question. With all the thorns and fire around you’d better hope this has a positive outcome. NB: A flower trail leading to your panel van is NEVER a good idea.

Jump out of a box!

This one’s cheap and requires very little practise… what could go wrong. Well you might scare your unwitting target half to death, but if she survives: congratulations! You’ve got yourself a prom date!

Be cute in the boot!

Another from the school of ‘if they don’t say yes just induce a state of shock and convince her otherwise’: hiding in the girl of your dreams’ car is definitely not creepy. No, not creepy at all.

Show how animated you are!

Calling all budding Tim Burtons: Why not use stop-motion animation to animate something… …slow and bleak like this text-heavy monochromatic scene. No need for artistic expression when slowly revealing how you draw the alphabet to the droning of David Gray will suffice!

Now it’s your turn!

These overblown gestures are all the rage stateside, and rest assured as prom in the UK continues to gain popularity it won’t be long before you’ll be expected to burst into double history and break into a romantic reinterpretation of N-Dubz’ I Need You. Let’s hope that Lloyd has more luck.

Be sure to attend Disney’s PROM when it opens in cinemas on June 3
