The Hangover Part II
I’m doing something that I wouldn’t usually do this weekend. I’m tracking box-office numbers for a film that I tried (miserably) to predict the total North American weekend box office for after failing to get into it on Thursday evening. That film is THE HANGOVER PART II. My guess-timation for the film’s total box-office was between $40 and $50 million. Total. I had had a few beers and was kinda miffed that I wasn’t going to be able to see it as I loved the original movie when it came out a couple of years ago.
It seems that I’m a little was off in terms of my box-office guessing game as the film took $10.4 million in ticket receipts at the Wednesday night midnight showings ALONE! Then, on Thursday – opening day – the film took $31.7 million (including the midnight cash) and then another $30 million on Friday, bringing it’s total haul to around $61.6 million in just two days. Remember, this is for just two days, and excludes foreign markets. The film is now on track to take $135 million over the US holiday weekend, making it not only the highest opener of the year, but the biggest R-rated comedy of all time. Wow! A third film is almost a definite.
In terms of other movies making a splash? Well, KUNG FU PANDA 2 should make around $65 to $70 million according to The Hollywood Reporter. Pretty good also. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES is rounding out the top three at present.
I will try and bring you an up to date estimate of the final figures as they become available.
FYI, THE HANGOVER PART II cost around $80 million to make.
