So THN spent this weekend knee deep in nerdy fun at the MCM Games, Comics and Movie Expo and all we can say is wow – what an experience. Whilst we were there getting our yearly supply of power packs for our Light Sabers we also took a little time out to check out a few movie previews being exhibited by Universal and Warner Bros.
Immortals – Released 11/11/11
The nifty looking release date is probably the coolest thing about this epic, mythical cross between Clash of the Titans and 300. Sure its got a fair few decent actors in it, and yeah there us that golden Snyder aesthetic that really made 300 pop. But really we couldn’t really see much of a story line in the trailer and were a little concerned that this is going to be a glossy slo-mo action feature that fails to raise the pulse-rate. We’ll wait and see but at present we remain unconvinced.
Green Lantern – Release 17/06/11
Green Lantern was sponsoring the MCM so everywhere you looked there were posters, banners, insignia and geeks huddled in corners chanting the Corps Oath with plastic green rings raised aloft. Coolios! THN had a raging green tinged chubby as we entered the exhibition hall about to be graced with a sneak preview of the upcoming DC spacey hero action movie. Unfortunately we were MAJORLY short changed by Warner Bros as all we got was essentially the most recent trailer intercut with interviews with the cast who, of course, were saying how great the movie is.
‘That’s what these movies are for – they’re supposed to capture our imagination in the most impossible ways’ – Ryan Reynolds on Green Lantern.
Here are the facts so far – Yes Green Lantern is a weird and far out character – but Thor was too and that’s paid off for Marvel. Ryan Reynolds is uber charming and has an easy wit that makes him great to watch. Martin Cambell – director of Casino Royal is at the helm, so at the very least it’s going to be well thought out and brilliantly shot. Each time we see new footage the film’s universe only gets bigger and bigger, which could be a risk as it might dilute the story trying to cram too much mythology in. THN recons that Green Lantern as a character is too weird for them to make a bad movie out of and are expecting a left field hit – a fun movie with an epic feel.
Johnny English Reborn – Released 7/10/11
Okay so you know you are at a sub-par convention when the film that excites you most is Johnny English! Fair comment, however Rowan Atkinson is an amazing comedy actor with brilliant timing and a face that would make Darth Vader chortle. This is probably a silly, slap-stick, by the numbers comedy but who cares, if it feels good do it. I defy anyone to watch the trailer and not smile at the end bit wit the impossible small chair – Brilliant!
A BA in Media & an Art MA doesn’t get you much in today’s world – what it does give you however is a butt-load of time to watch a heck of a lot of movies and engage in extensive (if not pointless) cinematic chitter chatter. Movies and pop-culture have always been at the forefront of Joe’s interest who has been writing for THN since 2009. With self-aggrandised areas of expertise including 1970s New Hollywood, The Coen Brothers, Sci-Fi and Adam Sandler, Joe’s voyeuristic habits rebound between Cinematic Classics and Hollywood ephemera, a potent mix at once impressively comprehensive and shamelessly low-brow.
