Gritty prison thriller SCREWED, out this Friday, 3rd June and directed by up-and-coming British director Reg Traviss, turns the genre on its head by showing life behind bars through the eyes of the guards.
In the film, James D’Arcy (Master & Commander) stars as Sam, an English everyman forced to take a job as a prison officer on his return from a traumatic tour of duty in Iraq. He quickly bonds with his hardened fellow screws but the violence and desperation he witnesses on the job and his haunting memories of bloodshed overseas draw him down into a world of drink and drugs – a world in which he is increasingly alienated from his family.
When a confrontation with the prison authorities on the inside and the fatal shooting of a fellow officer on the outside lead Sam to the realisation that the watchmen may be as corrupt as the prisoners they’re paid to watch, he becomes embroiled in a potentially deadly game of cat-and-mouse against the background of a full-scale cellblock riot.
Screwed is produced and co-written by the man who lived it, Ronnie Thompson, and directed by Reg Traviss (Joy Division, Psychosis) and in cinemas this Friday.
So to celebrate the release of SCREWED in cinemas nationwide on Friday, we take a c loser look at what are probably the world’s worst jobs as depicted on screen:
Stuck in a dead end job you’re not happy with? Count yourself lucky that you don’t have it as bad as these guys from the world of film…
PRISON OFFICER IN SCREWED
You’d think that after fighting in Iraq, any job would be an improvement on safety but this is not the case for James D’arcy’s character Sam in new prison drama, SCREWED. Placed as a prison officer, Sam is thrown into the world of prison life and is exposed to life under the radar of an inner city jail… don’t think most would be too up for it to be honest!
KENNY, THE PORTALOO DELIVERY MAN
In 2006 a documentary film was released that shed light on one job that I’m sure would top many of our lists of worst jobs. The film follows Kenny who earns his living as none other than a portaloo delivery man! The film follows Kenny’s trials and tribulations as he goes about his day to day life. The clip gives us a particularly memorable taste of Kenny’s rather grim day to day duties…
CAPTAIN WILLARD IN APOCOLYPSE NOW
When it comes to risky jobs, it doesn’t get much worse than that faced by Martin Sheen’s character, Captain Willard in the classic, Apocalypse Now. Sent during the heart of the Vietnam War on a secret mission that didn’t even officially exist into the depths of the jungle to caput the mad Colonel Kurtz he is faced with violence and dange,….
PROSTITUTE IN PRETTY WOMAN
As much as it all turns round for Julia later into the movie, she sure has a tough start to the film as we are introduced to her character, Vivien, a long suffering prostitute who is hired by a business man, Edward (Richard Gere) to escort him to some posh lunches. Being given grief from her landlord and looked down on nearly everyone else, Vivien definitely needed Edward to come and give her a break!
WINSTON ‘THE WOLF’ WOLF IN PULP FICTION
He says his job is to ‘solve problems’ but the problems he encounters aren’t quite your standard ones… disposing of dead bodies is more Winston’s fortay, but credit where credits due, he does it well! ‘The wolf’ as he likes to be called is brought in to dispose of the evidence of a couple of murders… not the most pleasant day job in the world.
Check out Screwed, in cinemas this Friday, 3rd June.
