Roland Emmerich attached to movie version of Atari classic Asteroids

If you need alien invasions, earth shattering disasters, or premature apocalypse, then INDEPENDENCE DAY director Roland Emmerich is surely your man. According to Vulture, Emmerich is first choice for cinematic re-working of ASTEROIDS, the classic Atari game. Universal have already hired screenwriter Matthew Lopez (RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN) to tenuously adapt the game into a plot, but are yet to confirm Emmerich (who is currently working on the unusually low-key Shakespeare conspiracy tale ANONYMOUS).

The story will be set in a post-apocalypse setting, where humans have already fled the Earth to take residence in distant colonies. Surrounded by asteroids fields and neighbouring aliens (apparently friendly), it’s only a matter of time before some serious business hits the fan (cue explosions, space action, and all-out ridiculousness). Though Emmerich is yet to agree, something about this project sounds very likely…
