Sony celebrate Global Smurfs Day and bag a Guinness World record

If you happened to have been in London this past weekend, you would have seen one of a number of things. One such thing could have been yours truly wandering aimlessly from pub to pub shamelessly taking in the rays and consuming my ample body weight in booze, or aternatively a number of folks walking around dressed from head to toe in blue. These mysterious people, of which I saw many, were actually partaking in a superb little event called Global Smurfs Day where fans across the world attempted to break the record for”Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Smurfs within a 24-hour Period in Multiple Venues,” and apparently they did it!

I didn't crop this image. Really...

People took part in the event in Brussels, Belgium; Athens, Greece; Scheveningen (The Hague), Holland; Dublin, Ireland; Mexico City, Mexico; Panama City, Panama; Warsaw, Poland; Moscow, Russia; Johannesburg, South Africa; New York, USA; and London, UK.

Adjudicators from Guinness World Records confirmed that a total of 4,891 people dressed as Smurfs in 11 locations simultaneously around the world, claiming a new title for Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Smurfs within a 24-hour Period in Multiple Venues.  The previous record had been 2,510 people dressed as Smurfs. Awesome!

This was also perfectly timed for the August release of THE SMURFS movie, and the worldwide events were organized by Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony Pictures Animation in anticipation of the release of film on August 10th.

We have a couple of images from the London event, which took place at the O2 on Saturday. Yes, that is GLEE’s Heather Morris in the final pic getting all Smurf-ed up too! Take a look.
