Sets in the City

I started the week on a high with a great little part in a Horn Brothers Picture. ‘Fly From Here’, is the latest track from the band Yes. The video was directed by Ken Horn, a prolific TV director who got a very filmic look using the Canon 60D. Check out this screen grab of me playing a 1940’s film star…

I will post the video here next week…Trevor Horn produced the song and also features in the promo as the Hollywood agent. The lead is played by Paul Fox who is about to be seen in George Lucas’ highly anticipated Red Tails.

‘Fly From Here’, is the latest track from the band Yes. We were filming at the beautiful Newark Air Museum in Notts & Lincs. It was like going back in time… I was so enamoured with the period costumes that I have to confess, I found it hard to take off the fur and jewels at the end of the day! The buzz of a music video set and it made me nostalgic and on the way home I remembered a few of the crazy video shoots I’ve been on… Up all night with the Sugababes… Watching U2 jam between takes, … Frolicking in the Mediterranean with The Streets and Kano…  But it all started for me with the number 1 song Touch Me by Rui Da Silva (click to see a blast from the past video)

The following day I went for a long and overdue lunch with my super-agent. Acting is a solitary profession and I sometimes yearn for water cooler moments with my colleagues. But as my agent kindly reminded me, “actors are not your friends, they are your worst enemies!” You wouldn’t believe the stories I’ve heard about bitching, jealousy and back stabbing between actors! Although I am lucky enough to have several good friends who are actors, I do have a theory that there are two types of actor… Those who would push and those who wouldn’t! I call it the ‘Showgirls’ syndrome after the 1995 Paul Verhoeven film. If you have seen the film you will understand what I mean…

“A young drifter, named Nomi, arrives in Las Vegas to become a dancer and soon sets about clawing and pushing her way to become the top of the Vegas showgirls.” I LOVED Showgirls! Gina Gershon is a fantastic actress and this movie is packed with provoking female characters. Love it or hate it, I bet you have something to say about it! You can watch the trailer here… Showgirls

As some of you may know I am slightly addicted to twitter. (You can follow me @cocolarose here). My tweek (tweet of the week) came from @Patrick_Regis, who I worked with on Rise of the Footsoldier. Patrick asked #casting is it an art or a science? While practice does make perfect, Patrick believes that casting, like acting, is a craft. I couldn’t agree more.

How better to end a productive week than with the familiar thud of a script hitting the doormat?  While I do like iBooks on the iPad, especially when I’m bouncing between meetings and scripts, I am reassured by the weight of thick script. This moment was even sweeter because it came with a offer. I still get quite giddy when I’m offered a part without even having to audition so when it happened twice in as many weeks I was over the moon! The screenplay read like a novel, I was hooked… I wish I could reveal more. All I can say is that it’s a period feature that has been green-lit and has some big names attached already! You will have to check back for more insider info, there will be more tales from Sets in the City next week…
