Jaume Collet-Serra, director this year’s ‘okay’ UNKNOWN is apparently in talks to direct the live-action remake/ adaptation of AKIRA.
Variety reports the news this morning.
Set in New Manhattan, the cyberpunk sci-fi epic follows the leader of a biker gang who must save his friend, discovered with potentially destructive psychokinetic abilities, from government medical experimentats.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company Appian Way is behind the movie, with the actor producing with partner Jennifer Davisson Killoran, along with Mad Chance’s Andrew Lazar.
UNKNOWN, which arrives on UK DVD and Blu-Ray next week, took $130 million during its theatrical run, from a reported budget of just $30 million.
AKIRA will have a budget set at around the $90 million mark.
