Universal drop The Dark Tower

THE DARK TOWER, the bohemoth of a movie set up at Universal which was set to be a big movie trilogy and accompanying TV series, has come across a stumbling block, as the studio have backed out.

Universal dropped the Stephen King project, which revolved around the gunslinger Roland Deschain. Ron Howard was all set to direct the first movie with Javier Bardem playing Deschain. Akiva Goldsman and Mark Verheiden were writing the screenplay. Now the project is in limbo and without a studio, but Deadline say that Warner Brothers may be up for picking it up, possibly using all of their cast from this past weekend’s big Harry Potter opening.

The budget for the series was undoubtably huge, with the story spanning seven novels.

The Dark Tower is about the last living member of a knightly order of gunslingers, with Deschain becoming humanity’s last hope to save civilization as he hits the road to find the Dark Tower. Along the way, he encounters characters, good and bad, in a world that has an old West feel.
