Johnny Five to live again as Hop director joins Short Circuit remake

Dimension Films’ effort to remake 80s fluff SHORT CIRCUIT has taken a new direction, as director Tim Hill has reportedly joined the project. According to Deadline, Hill’s arrival has put rest to Steve Carr’s (PAUL BLART: MALL COP) involvement. Hill – whose CV includes such delights as HOP and ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS – will apparently supervise script rewrites on the struggling production.

The original SHORT CIRCUIT (1986) follows robot Johnny 5, an experimental weapon that is struck by lightning and develops intelligence and emotions. It co-starred Steve Guttenberg and Ally Sheey, and spawned a 1988 sequel. Original producer David Foster is behind the remake.

Johnny Five will once again be alive, though perhaps some things are better off dead.
