Eddie Murphy to voice classic cartoon

Eddie Murphy has struggled with live-action success of late – in fact, he hasn’t done anything of value since 1999’s BOWFINGER. But the one thing Murphy has succeeded in is voicing animations, and his work on the likes of SHREK remains up there with his finest. It may come as good news to some then, that Murphy will voice HONG KONG PHOOEY in a big screen version of the 1970s Hanna-Barbera cartoon. The news comes from Alcon Entertainment, who are behind the new project. It is unknown yet how faithful the updated version will be, and whether it will be traditional 2D or 3D animation.

The original HONG KONG PHOOEY told the story of dog Penry who is granted mystical powers (which include walking, talking, and… er, kung fu). Along with his sidekick cat Spot, Penry dons his famous robes and takes on the wacky criminal underworld.
