Whitney Houston To Star In Remake Of 1976 Movie Sparkle

Hollywood has another remake on the cards in the form of SPARKLE, based on the 1976 original of the same name. The film is set to star Whitney Houston in her first film role since THE PREACHER’S WIFE all of the way back in 1996 (bar a role in TV movie called CINDERELLA).

The Hollywood Reporter reports:

The original Sparkle was inspired by the story of the Supremes, and centered on the three Williams sisters, who begin singing in their church choir in Harlem in the late 1950s and become a successful girl group. Their sudden rise unravels their personal lives.

The new film will also star Jordin Sparks and Mike Epps, with Houston just ‘in negotiations’ at present. Sparks will play the lead role in the movie, named Sparkle Williams while Epps will play the part of a stand-up comedian. Houston would play the role of Effie, Sparkle’s mother (if she comes aboard).

Salim Akil (JUMPING THE BROOM) will direct, with Mara Brock Akil penning the screenplay.

Here’s a clip from the original.
