THE SIMPSONS has been running for a staggering 22 years and is now on its 23rd season. There are no visible signs of the show slowing its production and continues to have success with contracts still ongoing with FOX. But what will happen to the series when it eventually ends?
Chase Carey, Chief Operating Officer at News Corp said at a press conference, that the company is looking towards ways of increasing expenditure for the show and possibly in the form of an All-Simpsons-Channel. He is excited about the prospect of a channel for a show that is “unique in television with a volume, too, that is unprecedented.”
The Simpsons has an extensive back-catalog already and Carey said that if this channel were to happen they would have to wait until the shows current contracts have expired, it might be several years before a channel is up and running.
It does make sense to have a place where all THE SIMPSONS episodes are available but is a full-time channel necessary? Although it would be nice to have a SIMPSONS-safety net when there’s nothing else on, I’m not sure how exciting the prospect is considering the amount re-runs we would encounter.
THE SIMPSONS is an incredibly influential programme and has some of the most famous characters in television history. In its prime (seasons 3 – 11 in my opinion) pretty much every episode was fantastic. And so with that, I guess if the channel does ever get the go-ahead, despite the repeats, I’ll certainly never want to stop watching THE SIMPSONS and I suppose other people won’t either.
