John Singleton And Ice Cube Are Collaborating On N.W.A Biopic

The director of the brilliantly raw BOYZ N THE HOOD (1991) and SHAFT (2000), is set to orchestrate the story of N.W.A. They are one of the world’s most influential rap groups, whose success has helped revolutionise the music industry and establish opportunities for many African American people; especially musicians. Ice Cube, who starred in Singleton’s BOYZ N THE HOOD, and is one of the original founding members of N.W.A, is working closely with him on the project, entitled STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON; this is also the name of N.W.A’s debut album.

Although the project is still in its early stages, Singleton did mention it while conversing with the press about his recently completed film, ABDUCTION (starring Taylor Lautner). He commented:

“I can’t talk too prematurely about the stuff I’m doing because nothing’s come to fruition yet, but Cube and I are talking about doing the N.W.A. story… The script is really, really good, and so we’re just figuring it out. New Line really wants to make it.”

Eazy-E’s widow, Tomica Woods-Wright and Dr. Dre will also help produce the film, which will doubtless be a nostalgic experience for the two.

N.W.A formed in the 1980s, and soon became renowned for their rousing, explicit and politically charged lyrics. Perhaps their most famous song is ‘Fuck Tha Police’; the lyrics of which protests against police brutality and racial profiling.
