Emma Stone (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, THE HELP) and Ryan Gosling (DRIVE, THE NOTEBOOK) are so hot right now. They are that rare combination of being genuinely talented, universally popular and are really, really, ridiculously good looking. This year, they starred together in Crazy, Stupid Love and have been spotted shooting scenes together for GANGSTER SQUAD, also starring Sean Penn (MILK, THE TREE OF LIFE) and Josh Brolin (TRUE GRIT, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN). Directed by Ruben Fleischer (ZOMBIELAND, 30 MINUTES OR LESS), this will be his first feature without Jesse Eisenberg and his second outing with Stone. The official outline for the movie reads thusly-
Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and—if he has his way—every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop… except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart.
It reminds THN of THE UNTOUCHABLES (1987), but what that lacked and this will have in spades is Stone and Gosling making smoochy times wearing vintage clothes. Al Capone can do one.
THE GANGSTER SQUAD is scheduled for release in 2013.
