New promo images for the untitled SNOW WHITE project have been unveiled courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, giving us a first glimpse at Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen. Not to be confused with SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN — a gothic take on the fairy tale starring TWILIGHT’s Kristin Stewart — this adaptation appears more faithful but no less lavish. Also starring Lily Collins (ABDUCTION) and Armie Hammer (THE SOCIAL NETWORK) as Snow White and the Prince respectively, the 2012 release is directed by Tarsem Singh, who made his directorial debut with… THE CELL starring Jennifer Lopez.)
First up we have two images of Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen. Singh commented that the salmon-coloured extravaganza seen below is low-key compared to some other outfits. ‘It took 14 people to help carry her wedding dress. [Roberts] had to take three steps, and they were very difficult.’
A second look for the Queen below shows a red peacock dress worn for a costume ball. Designed by Oscar-winning costume maker Eiko Ishioka (BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA), Signh noted that Roberts had to suffer for fashion.
‘Eiko’s stuff is notoriously non-practical, so I have to make sure that she understands that in these clothes the person has to move,’ Singh jokes. ‘She will literally make clothes that are impossible for people to move in. We have to work out only the practical issues, and nothing else. Never the creative issues.’ (You can have a closer look at this outfit and further promo images over at People.)
Here we have a first look at Armie Hammer’s Prince Andrew Alcott, who appears to be both a lover and a fighter. The sword-fighting prince will apparently face-off against giants.
It seems Snow White isn’t one to shy away from a fight in the image below, as she is taught how to use a sword by one of the Seven Dwarves. After being exiled the Queen’s majordomo played by THE BIRDCAGE’s Nathan Lane, the dwarves take pity on Snow. ‘They all train her in different things’ teased Singh.
And here they are — the Seven Dwarves and a dolled up Snow White. From left to right we have: Jordan Prentice, Joey Gnoffo, Sebastian Saraceno, Lily Collins, Martin Klebba, Mark Provinelli, Ronald Lee Clark, and Danny Woodburn.
‘These guys have a height problem, so they wear stilts much of the time,’ stated Singh, ‘ou have to make yourself look big when you’re that small. When they have a fight, they’re nine feet tall. When they come home, they go down into their tree and live small.’
Last but not least we have Snow White giving Björk a run for her money as a swan at the Evil Queen’s costume ball. Sneaking in to seek help from the prince, can Snow defeat the villainess?
The untitled project — which I’m convinced will end up being called SNOW WHITE — is written by Jason Keller (MACHINE GUN PREACHER) and Melissa Wallack (her first writing credit) and directed by Tarsem Singh (IMMORTALS). With little work in the creator’s back catalogues it’s difficult to picture how this adaptation will turn out, and the pressure is certainly on with competition from Rupert Sanders’ SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN. Time will tell.
