Ben Affleck To Take ‘The Stand’

Warner Bros. has finally decided upon a director to bring Stephen King’s epic novel THE STAND to the big screen and that director will be Ben Affleck.

His first feature as writer/director was GONE BABY GONE, a fantastic thriller based on the Denis Lahane best-seller. Affleck followed that up with the equally great THE TOWN, the Boston set film centred on a group of career criminals in the bank robbery capital of the world. Both films were very accomplished pieces and both featured actors giving performances that were nominated for Acadamy Awards. This showcasing Affleck, who is currently directing and starring in Argo, as a director able to pull terrific turns from the ensembles he works with.

THE STAND was turned into a mini-series in 1994 starring Gary Sinise and Rob Lowe which itself has a cult following, but this will be the first attempt at transferring King’s killer virus tale to the big-screen. It was previously thought HARRY POTTER regular David Yates was favourite to helm.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
