Iron Man 3 Will Not Feature Stark’s Alcoholism

Speaking to fans at Long Beach Comic-Con, Shane Black (LETHAL WEAPON) confirmed that IRON MAN 3 will not focus on Tony Stark’s perpetual battle with alcohol addiction, and the script will not be adapted from the comic ‘Demon in a Bottle’, the story where Tony Stark tries to quit alcohol.

The writer/director explained why he wasn’t going emphasise Stark’s alcoholism for the upcoming film;

‘If we go there, it’s part of Tony’s character, but I think the ‘Demon in a Bottle’ aspect, if you go there, you really have to go there. The film then becomes about that, because the journey that involves recovering from alcoholism is an entire movie.’

It appears Black is still keen to keep IRON MAN 3 in a darker realm than its predecessors, but it seems he doesn’t want to highlight the negative parts of Tony Stark’s life.

‘I mean, I want to keep it dark and interesting and edgy and spicy and all those things, but I don’t think we want to go as far as to deal with Tony’s descent into alcoholic madness. That’s maybe not where we want to be.’

Although there were hints to Stark’s love of hooch in previous films, this aspect of his character hasn’t really been addressed properly, and it doesn’t seem like Hollywood is interested in doing so at any time soon.

Production on IRON MAN 3 is set to begin in early 2012, and the film is scheduled for release on 3rd May 2013.
