James Earl Jones Receives Honorary Oscar On The London Stage

A matinee audience attending the production of ‘Driving Miss Daisy’ on Saturday, at the Wyndhams Theatre in the West End, witnessed Jones being presented his honorary Oscar by Sir Ben Kingsley. He accepted the award via video link because doing so in person would have interrupted his run in the play, which also stars Vanessa Redgrave. He said he was “plain gobsmacked” as he graciously accepted the award.

The versatile 80-year-old has starred in a diverse array of  films during his immense and prolific career, ranging from the hilarious COMING TO AMERICA (1988) to the suspenseful THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER (1990). His deep, booming voice, which provided speech for many memorable characters, including the evil Darth Vader in the original STAR WARS trilogy, is just one of the many attributes in his vast acting repertoire.

Oprah Winfrey and make-up artist, Chad Smith (THE EXORCIST, TAXI DRIVER) also received honorary Oscars for their extensive work in the industry.

Martin has been a film buff (or geek, if you prefer) for as long as he can remember. However, he lives and longs for storytelling of all kinds, and writes across numerous mediums to feed his insatiable appetite. He lives in north-west London, and his favourite films are, possibly: PAN'S LABYRINTH, THEY LIVE, PSYCHO, HIGH FIDELITY, ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST, STAND BY ME, SIDEWAYS and OFFICE SPACE.
