Star Trek Sequel: Pre-Production Update

The wheels are still turning for the thus far untitled sequel to 2009’s STAR TREK, directed by JJ Abrams – with locations, scripting and casting information in circulation, as well as an official start date for production of January 15th, 2012.

The sequel’s script is apparently in the finalising stages, with drafts already completed. Writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof are reported to be scaling down the script in order to ensure it fits into Paramount’s budget, though the studio remains ‘very enthusiastic about the project and very supportive of producer/director Abrams and his core team’.

Many sets are returning from the original film, such as the USS Enterprise, along with the entire original main cast, who are also signed on for a third film. New characters are also currently being discussed, though none have yet been cast. Furthermore, Abrams has been scouting locations for the film, including a jungle planet based in Hawaii and a famous Trek milieu in a Los Angeles museum.

While no plot details have yet arisen, the project is thought to be on a larger scale than the first film, which was pretty huge anyway. Let’s just hope their ambition doesn’t blow things too wildly out of proportion.
