People go nuts for 3D stuff. Personally I resent it when I take a trip to the cinema and I’m forced to pay extra to watch a film in the supposedly fantastic 3D glossy finish. It’s not my cup of tea.
Saying that though, James Cameron’s TITANIC is a pretty fantastic flick and it certainly strikes me as one that could be enhanced by the wonders of 3D. Much like JACKASS 3D I believe the film genuinely has moments that would be a little more enjoyable in the third dimension than in the second.
3D probably would help to emphasise the mite of the vessel cruising the open seas and quite rightly as Cameron points out (in the video below) that the extra dimensions could increase the tenderness and intimacy in close up, gentle shots. All this being said though, I still can’t help but feel that 3D is just a little silly and other than seeing the JACKASS goofballs hurting themselves in funny looking shots, I’m not hugely interested in what seems to be a fad.
Suffice to say that my opinion certainly won’t turn many heads. I’m amongst thousands of 3D haters, a lot of which I can imagine whining about this, and the film’s inevitably obscene gross upon re-release, and to be honest it just seems easier to let the whole thing sail over my head.
The love tale that was originally released in 1997 will indeed be back on the big screens by the 6th of April 2012 in brilliant 3D. I am confident that the revamp will look really nice and I’m sure that once again Cameron will have a field day counting all his money. But the whole ordeal certainly does beg the question; are fat cat filmmakers just going to continue to re-release their big films in 3D? If so the future of filmmaking might well be in jeopardy.
