Pegg And Bird Talk Mission: Impossible’s Franchise Future

It was rumoured immedietley after casting was confirmed, that Jeremy Renner’s involment with MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL would see him take over from Tom Cruise as the franchises lead IMF agent. Well according to returning star Simon Pegg and the films new director Brad Bird nothing could be further from the truth, erm…now.

‘I think that might have been the plan earlier on, but as the film progressed and we enjoyed it so much I think the idea of Ethan Hunt retiring fell by the wayside. Tom [Cruise] suddenly remembered why he loved doing these films so much and suddenly thought “well maybe I do want to do more?”‘

And on the idea if this latest instalment is successful on his character Benji’s involvement in a fifth entry, Pegg stated:

‘I’d love to be part of that gang again. It’d be nice to see them go into a mission a little better equipped and prepared and have some things that actually work”, as opposed to what goes on in the latest film.’

Director Brad Bird, which GHOST PROTOCOL is his first foray into live-action film-making after animated hits THE IRON GIANT, THE INCREDIBLES and RATATOUILLE says about a possible return:-

‘It’s really rough to discuss having another kid when you’re still in the delivery room, recovering from the process, so ask me in about six months. These films involve some wear and tear, you know.’

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL is due in cinemas 26th December 2011 and stars Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Paula Patton and Tom Wilkinson.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
