When Apes Rise Again…Will They Speak?

The award for the summer blockbuster that surprised most people this year easily belongs to Rupert Wyatt’s RISE OF THE THE PLANET OF THE APES. Not much was expected of the prequel after Tim Burton’s 2001 overblown science-fiction effort brought the franchise to its knees, but THE ESCAPIST helmer gave movie fans a thrilling adventure film. Aided by Andy Serkis superb motion-capture performance as Ceaser, RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES has even been talked about as the first film to garner an Academy Award nomination for an actor in that particular growing art-form.

Now with Wyatt confirmed as director for the follow-up, screenwriters for the film and the forthcoming sequel, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, have spoken about the question on everyone’s lips after Ceaser finally spoke a word at the films finale… Will the apes learn to talk?

We’re working on the sequel right now, to the prequel, and so the excitement is – I’m not gonna tell you, but – are they gonna talk or not? Part of the challenge was how to get across what was happening between the apes without words. In the end I think it was a good challenge for us. It created better storytelling.

So with both Wyatt and Serkis locked on to return and James Franco also rumoured to be involved, pressure will now be on both Fox and the filmmakers to deliver a film just as good. Lets hope they surprise everyone even further by surpassing this effort.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
