Clooney To Tackle The Monument’s Men

George Clooney has confirmed his next directing and starring feature will be an adaptation on Robert Edsel’s novel THE MONUMENT’S MEN. Clooney will adapt alongside writing and producing partner Grant Heslov. The two have previously worked together on the likes of GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK and this years outstanding political thriller THE IDES OF MARCH.

Speaking at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Clooney has said of the new project:-

It’s an amazing story, and Grant and I are already thinking about how great the casting can be, and there’s also a great love story.

THE MONUMENT’S MEN will chart the true story of a World War II mission that saw a group of art historians land in Normandy with the intent to salvage priceless works looted by Adolf Hitler. The 11 individuals involved were never trained in combat but became involved on the battlefield to give instructions and point out in order save important structures. Clooney cheekily commented that they would shout thing’s like:-

Don’t aim your tank over there, that’s the Leaning Tower of Pisa! Hitler was an art fanatic, and he stashed masterpieces everywhere. He hid 27 Rembrants in a coffin.

The love story aspect will centre on a French resistance member named Rose Valland. She would aid the art historians in locating the important and priceless pieces.

The project certainly sounds fascinating with a fresh story that is unlike any wartime drama I have seen or heard of. Possibly the closest one can think of is THE DIRTY DOZEN meets THREE KINGS (which also featured Clooney) and with THE DESCENDANTS actor heavily involved in the adaptation, it will most certainly be a must see upon release.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
