Richard Schiff is the latest actor to land a part in Zack Snyder’s upcoming Superman reboot MAN OF STEEL. The Emmy winner, best known for playing Toby Ziegler in THE WEST WING, is to play a character named ‘Dr Hamilton’. The character is most likely to have been inspired by Emil Hamilton, a science professor who has featured regularly in DC’s Superman comics.
The character of Hamilton has featured in previous adaptations, most notably SUPERMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES and SMALLVILLE, in which Alessandro Juliani played the role.
Whilst Emil Hamilton has fought alongside and against Kyrpton’s last son, he is better known as a villainous character. Whether he will be portrayed as ally or enemy in MAN OF STEEL remains a mystery. Interestingly, the casting news comes only days after rumours had circulated regarding a potential cameo of Superman’s arch-nemesis Lex Luthor (with Bradley Cooper as a potential casting choice – read our report here). Main villain duties will go to Michael Shannon as fan favourite baddie General Zod.
MAN OF STEEL is directed by Zack Snyder and stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Laurence Fishburne, Russell Crowe, and Kevin Costner. It arrives in cinemas summer 2013.
