Ludlum Novel ‘The Sigma Protocol’ Developing At Universal

After the commercial and critical success of Robert Ludlum’s Jason Bourne franchise, Universal are looking to get a film based on the late author’s final novel off the ground. The studio are lining up legendary producer Irwin Winkler to write, alongside Jose Ruisanchez.

Ludlum’s novel is set in Switzerland and follows vacationing American, Ben Hartman. After running into an old school friend named Jimmy Cavanaugh, Ben is almost killed when his former buddy turns homicidal. He is drawn into complex conspiracy involving skilled assassins, corrupt corporations and a previously-thought-dead twin brother, all while running for his life .

No director is attached as yet, although Winkler has directorial experience it will be doubtful he would helm, as his films have ‘hardly set the world alight’. His last effort, 2006’s HOME OF THE BRAVE, a war drama starring Samuel L. Jackson and Jessica Biel – ended up going straight-to-DVD. Winkler’s success has always been as a producer, with classics like POINT BLANK (1967), ROCKY (1976), RAGING BULL (1980) and GOODFELLAS (1990).

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
