Chronicle’s Josh Trank Eyed For Fantastic Four

Superhero-turned-psycho feature, CHRONICLE, is still weeks away from release but director Josh Trank has certainly caught the attention of 20th Century Fox. The Max Landis-scripted ‘found-footage’ film has a neat and promising idea, one the studio imagines could lead to the director helming a reboot of their FANTASTIC FOUR franchise. A number of meetings between 20th Century Fox and Trank are said to have taken place. Marvel’s superhero family was the topic of conversation and if CHRONICLE is a success, Trank is said to be pretty much guaranteed to get the gig.

FANTASTIC FOUR and its sequel RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER made a ton of money at the box-office, but fans of the source material were less than impressed. Director Tim Story was a surprising choice to helm such a huge comic-book project with only disappointing comedies BARBERSHOP and TAXI on his résumé. An even bigger surprise came when it was known he would return for the lukewarm sequel and has since gone on to direct episodes of CSI: MIAMI, which tells a story in itself.

A rebooted FANTASTIC FOUR will no doubt be a hit with fans and Josh Trank’s involvement, after his dark and twisted latest take on the superhero genre, should make the previous camp villainy a distant memory. This, of course, depends on the success of CHRONICLE.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
