Ralph Fiennes has spoken, albeit in a veiled manner, about his forthcoming role in the latest instalment of the James Bond saga, SKYFALL. The diverse and classically trained actor has been rumoured to star as the recurring super villain, Bolfeld, who has been famously portrayed by actors such as Donald Pleasence, Telly Savalas, Charles Gray and Max von Sydow (as well as being parodied by Mike Myers in the AUSTIN POWERS trilogy via the Dr Evil character).
When asked to shed light on the rumour, Fiennes responded with this:
‘I can’t say anything. Well, I can tell you I think the script is very good indeed, and I think the character relationships are very well drawn and that it’s witty and funny – and yes, it has all the things that Bond fans want, which is action and events and locations.’
After a little more prompting, Fiennes declared, ‘I’m afraid that all I can tell you is I’m a government agent.’
When questioned on the tone and style of the film, he simply stated, ‘This film will contain more of hard-edged Bond.’
Hard-edged Bond seems to be what fans want, but does no one see that James Bond should be a beautifully ludicrous character? He is meant to be a Secret agent, but he is seemingly recognised by almost everybody he encounters. Gritty realism does not go hand in hand with this notion, and could be construed as insulting to the viewer (especially when played by Daniel – watch me brood endlessly – Craig). Conversely, if anyone could make the new ‘no nonsense’ Bond worth watching it would be Ralph Fiennes, but surely the over-the-top, tongue-in-cheek Bond of old, who sweats droplets of charm, charisma and sex appeal is still the way to go?
Sam Mendes will helm the production which boasts an impressive supporting cast, including Judi Dench, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw, Albert Finney, Helen McCrory and Javier Bardem.
SKYFALL is due for release in the UK on the 26th October 2012.
