BBC’s Sherlock Confirmed For Third Series

After a successful three episode run, it has been confirmed that BBC sleuth drama SHERLOCK will return for a third series. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman will be back as the titular detective and his oft-exasperated sidekick respectively, though given their currently packed schedules (STAR TREK’s sequel for the former, LORD OF THE RINGS’ prequel for the latter), a long wait is to be expected.

The second instalment has proven to be an impressive hit, with a captive audience of 8.8 million tuning in for the New Year’s Day episode and 7.9 watching Sunday’s finale. Co-creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, big fans of the cliff hanger, left a lot up in the air at the end of the second series, but were quick to reassure fans that there was more to come. Moffat, always the jokester, took to Twitter, announcing that a third series had been commissioned at the same time as the second.

Though Moffat and Gatiss’ tweets of “gotcha!” are really quite obnoxious, fans will be relieved to learn that there are more bromantic sleuth hijinx in the pipeline. It might be a while before they return, but at least there is a guarantee that there will be more wise cracking and little subtitles explaining how Sherlock deduces things.

Jokester? Obnoxious? Oh, you really have no idea.

    Obnoxious? Nay. Sarcastic? Yes.

You don’t think tweeting “gotcha!” is fairly obnoxious?

Not really, sir. Moffat is highly sarcastic, a lot, the fan base that you can see out there take it with a pinch of salt, which is exactly how it should be taken.

I think it comes down to whether you like the series/style or not. The news is more relevant/topical than how you feel about the confirmation to be honest.

I’ve not really got strong opinions one way or the other on Sherlock or Moffat, though I’ve got a lot of time for Mark Gatiss’ work. The “gotcha!” tweets just rubbed me up the wrong way I guess. Seemed a tad smug.
