Nicholas Stoller, director of FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL and pal of Jason Segel, is currently working on a sitcom pilot for CBS. Though the project is still in its infancy, the show will apparently be somewhat autobiographical, focussing on a guy whose messy breakup is complicated when he discovers that his ex is his new co-worker. Stoller is currently married, so it’s safe to assume he didn’t break up with a girl who turned out to be operating one of the muppets.
America has something of a surplus of high quality comedies at the moment, with the likes of PARKS AND RECREATION, COMMUNITY (come back soon!) and 30 ROCK on NBC, HAPPY ENDINGS on ABC, big recent hit NEW GIRL and cult favourite RAISING HOPE on Fox, and the past-its-peak-but-often-still-good HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER on CBS. MOTHER, in particular, has proven to be extremely popular, with probably the most success in the UK of any recent American comedy (apart from, perhaps, TWO AND A HALF MEN, also a CBS property). But the show’s mystery is, seemingly, coming towards its end game. Though it may not be ending soon, it must be ending soonish, and CBS will be wanting another MOTHER, a show that has had success both commercially and critically, with a devoted fanbase that just needs to know who some kids’ mother is.
Stoller is a talented guy (check back in 2030; I reckon SARAH MARSHALL will be the Apatow film that stands the test of time), and has some terrific contacts in the comedy world. His last TV writing job was on Apatow’s underrated UNDECLARED (mostly penning Segel-centric episodes). Even if the premise isn’t anything thrilling-sounding or high concepty, his involvement makes the proposed show something to look out for.
