Could James Wan’s ‘The Conjuring’ Have Its Leads?

SAW writer and director James Wan’s last film was the suitably creepy INSIDIOUS. The film was a box-office smash that showed some of Hollywood’s other horror filmmakers how to make a good old-fashioned haunted house movie. I found the film very effective and is easily one of, if not the best ‘paranormal-themed’ thrillers since Tobe Hooper’s POLTERGEIST. Albeit the final third fell apart in places, but the build up of tension was enough to keep me hooked.

So for Wan’s next venture into the supernatural world, it appears the director is looking at his INSIDIOUS star Patrick Wilson to headline THE CONJURING. Wilson could also be joined by THE DEPARTED and SOURCE CODE’s Vera Farmiga. The two are in talks to play a married pair of psychic investigators that encounter the most violent, demonic force of their careers in a Rhode Island farmhouse. The supposed true story (aren’t they all), is actually based on a case from the seventies involving the Perron family and demonoligists Ed and Lorraine Warren.

The film is being developed at New Line Cinema and is scheduled to begin shooting in North Carolina in March. Surprisingly Wan, who usually collaborates with Leigh Whannell, will this time adapt a script written by Chad and Carey Hayes.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
