Underworld: Awakening Surprises Box Office

Kate Beckinsale’s UNDERWORLD AWAKENING has surprisingly taken the top spot in the US box office on their opening weekend. Beckinsale has returned to the franchise for this new instalment and it appears that it has done wonders for the paying public. It took $25.4m which beats RISE OF THE LYCANS and even the debut UNDERWORLD feature all the way back in 2003. It’s  decent start for the re-launch which brings the vampire warrioress Selene back to the fore as she leads the battle against humankind.

Following up in second place is Lucasfilm’s RED TAILS, the Cuba Gooding Jr action-drama which follows African American pilots in the Tuskegee training program who were kept mostly on the ground during World War II but are called into duty under the guidance of Col. A.J. Bullard. It opened at $19.1m with 3rd spot currently taken by the under-performing CONTRABAND.

UNDERWORLD AWAKENING was released this weekend in UK and they hope to follow a similar pattern of success over here.
