Uggie, the perfectly performing pooch from Oscar favourite THE ARTIST is ready to retire. He maybe only 10, but in dog years, that’s about Steve Martin. And like that fellow silver haired star, Uggie is past his prime. But not before awards season, as he is nominated for two Golden Collars (thats the BAFTAs of the canine world) for his performances in that very silent movie and WATER FOR ELEPHANTS, alongside Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson. Not only that, but he is strongly rumoured to perform at the Academy Awards.
‘We don’t force our dogs to do this’ says Sarah Clifford, one of Uggie’s trainers. ‘And it always has to be fun for them. Uggie’s still enjoying it but he’s getting up there and he’s slowing down a little.’ So a well earned rest for our favourite Jack Russell, but not before his date with destiny at the Oscars, which will be his curtain call. But fear not doggy lovers, for Uggie’s has a protege. His little brother Dash is training to fill his mentor’s paw-boots (they exist, look’em up) and will be charming movie goers for years to come.
The Academy Awards take place on 26th February. Stay tuned here at THN for all the latest Oscar news.
