Winslet and Keener Join Kaufman’s Frank Or Francis

Back in 2004 Kate Winslet earned herself an Oscar nomination for her performance as voluntary-amnesiac Clementine in ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, while in 2000 Catherine Keener received her first Oscar nod as the vindictive Maxine in BEING JOHN MALKOVICH. Now the pair will unite on screen in Charlie Kaufman’s latest self-penned-and-directed outing FRANK OR FRANCIS.

The film is a satirical look at Hollywood and blogging, in which a film director (The titular ‘Frank’) feuds with a malicious online troll (‘Francis’). Did I mention that it’s a musical? Steve Carrell takes the role of the auteur director who does online-battle with Jack Black’s blog commenter… Through the medium of song. I can’t wait.

Nicolas Cage — who took two lead roles as identical twins in Kaufman’s ADAPTATION — is also set to appear as a fading comedian signed up to host the Oscars. Take that, Billy Crystal. Kevin Kline is taking Cage’s identical-twin-crown by playing the director of a failed Oscar-bait movie, and his brother, who join forces to invent a machine that will write a foolproof Oscar winner. Don’t forget they’ll be singing.

Winslet and Keener’s roles have yet to be announced but I don’t think we’ll be disappointed. FRANK OR FRANCIS won’t see a cinematic release until 2013. The writer/director is also planning a satirical look at politics with a Joaquin Phoenix led feature about world leaders who meet in secret and run the world.
