We now have confirmation, after the recent rumours, that Joe Carnahan will indeed helm a remake of the 1970s revenge thriller DEATH WISH. This comes from the man himself, who went on to give a few details, via his twitter account, that he will go back to the original source material of author Brian Garfield’s 1972 novel:-
Guys, I’m doing ‘Death Wish.’ But this version is a re-imagining of the book and set in present day Los Angeles. The L.A. of ‘Collateral.’ It’s on buses, cabs, metro trains. I want to show an unseen version of L.A. L.A. on foot. Prowling. Hunting. The vast emptiness of downtown.
When pushed by fans on just who will portray the lead, previously played by Charles Bronson in the original Michael Winner film, Carnahan would not say, other than that he plans to work again on DEATH WISH, with one of stars from THE GREY, Frank Grillo. Athough he played down talk of the WARRIOR actor as the lead.
Nobody said anything about Frank playing the Kersey part. Relax folks. We have a plan.
Having always been impressed with Joe Carnahan as filmmaker, whether making dumb and enjoyable action flicks like SMOKIN’ ACES and THE A-TEAM or more serious gritty fare like NARC, I was also blown away by his latest, THE GREY. For those yet to do so, I can’t heap enough praise on the film really must be seen. While a film featuring Liam Neeson and his surviving plane crash buddies, doing their best to conquer the elements of a frozen wilderness while avoiding a pack of ravenous wolves, may sound silly, THE GREY is breathtaking and brilliant with a performance from Neeson that even eclipses that of his Oskar Schindler. Do not miss it!
