This week has seen an onslaught of everything THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, and director Marc Webb isn’t letting up yet – speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about the film and recent theatrical trailer, including bringing the Lizard to the screen.
Monday’s global event in London, Rio de Janiero, New York, Munich, Paris et al saw the premiere of the film’s first full theatrical trailer – a very promising look at the franchise reboot. Webb discussed his intentions with the trailer:
‘This time we wanted to show Peter and Gwen a little bit more. To get to know more of the characterization, and a lot of the visual effects stuff that we’ve been working on, just to display the attitude of the film that we’re trying to create.’
The director also stated his intentions with the film, and how it differed from Sam Raimi’s original trilogy of Spidey flicks:
‘There’s narrative differences, like the Gwen Stacy saga is something from the comics that I’ve always really, really loved. There’s what happened to his parents, which is a huge thing. But there’s the villain, Dr. Connors and The Lizard, which never came to fruition in the movies.’
That villain, Webb promises, will be an interpretation unlike those seen previously – instead of having a ‘man-sized reptile in a lab coat’, Webb’s team focused on grounding the character in scientific realism:
‘We spent a lot of time thinking about the biology of a lizard, and how his muscles work, and there’s an entire staff of people dedicated to making him look lifelike. It is an extraordinary task, and very, very difficult. It takes a lot of time.’
We’ll have to wait until July to see what the fans think of this new incarnation. He certainly looked different to classic artistic interpretations in the trailer and preview footage seen at Monday’s global event.
THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Denis Leary and Campbell Scott, and will be released in cinemas on 3rd July 2012.
