With a number of his films over the years having already been remade, Alfred Hitchcock appears to have another of his classics set for a big-screen update. REBECCA, the only one of the iconic directors films to win a Best Picture Oscar, is being developed by Dreamworks and Working Title Films.
The 1940 original was based on the novel by Daphne Du Maurier and starred the late, great Laurence Oliver as well as Joan Fontaine. The film was Hitchcock’s first American film, and one that cemented him as a master of mystery and suspense.
EASTERN PROMISES scribe Steven Knight has penned the screenplay, that if sticks to the original tale, will see a naive young women marry and move into the Gothic mansion with rich widower Maxim de Winter. Once there, she soon finds the mysterious memory of de Winter’s late wife maintaining a major effect on the life of her newly acquired husband, household and one that even extends to the servants.
